In this section of the newsletter we put the spotlight on the trends, developments and knowledge of a particular country. This edition: Japan! Most people think “sushi, sashimi, fish” when they think about Japan. So what’s all this about Japan and pizza?
Believe it or not, Japan is where you want to be for the most unusual, bizarre pizzas. In our opinion, anyway. Seriously, we’ve seen hotdog, hamburger, seaweed and potato pizzas!
In fact, the so-called “Potato pizza” is a huge phenomenon. While completely unknown in the Netherlands, you’ll find this variety in virtually every pizzeria in Japan.
A “Potato pizza” is a pizza topped with potato and “Kewpie Mayonnaise”. In Japan, the pizza is usually covered with a big swirl of this real Japanese “Kewpie Mayonnaise”. It’s the same mayonnaise that is used in particular types of sushi at sushi restaurants.
Did you know that having a pizza delivered in Japan is much more expensive than in other countries? That’s because fuel is so expensive. So, because of the high prices, a pizza party tends to be a special event where everyone gets just one or two slices of pizza.
